Objectives

The Nautical Know How Basic Boating Safety Course is made available to educate and provide information to anyone interested in boating and boating safety. The objectives of the course are to make the general public aware of the following:

  • State and Federal laws and regulations as they pertain to boating and vessel operation.
  • Aspects of boating that not only help you become a safer boater, but also make boating a more enjoyable activity.
  • Issues in boating which could potentially be dangerous to the marine environment.
  • Making boaters aware of their responsibility to themselves, their guests and other boaters.

This course is designed to introduce a boater to legal and safe boating practices. It applies to all who use a boat, whether as skipper or as someone simply along for the fun.

It is primarily designed to address the requirements of smaller recreational vessels, although some mention of larger vessels does appear. Again, we encourage you to use this course as a starting point in your continuing boating education.
